New Song! "Let's Get Bloody"

This week's new song, "Let's Get Bloody," serves multiple purposes. It's an entry for next week's Songfight. It's my fifth weekly song of 2010. It's also the first song of my February Album Writing Month project.

I had to wrestle pretty hard with my software to get this finished, hence the lateness, so sorry about that. Have a listen and let me know what you think!

My weekly song is a few hours late this week, but it's up there now, and it's called "Know it All." Give it a listen!

New song! "Do It Again" (Beach Boys cover)

Hey everyone! See the corresponding blog post for the full story, but today, for the third song in my song-a-week project, I'm unveiling a cover of "Do It Again" by the Beach Boys. I played it relatively straight, so if you like the original, and if you stick a little cotton in your ears, you just might like my rendition of it.

It's part of Songfight's Gift of Music sidefight, and is presented as a gift to fellow fighter LSK. I hope you enjoy it.

This song also marks the debut of my new bass, which was sold to me at a criminally discounted price by Paco del Stinko. Go visit Paco at and tell him how much we all love him.

Hear the new song here!

New Song - "Waiting for the Other Shoe to Drop"

Remember back in February 2009, when I recorded my album 14 Stories for February Album Writing Month? Well, only half of it got recorded, but they all got written, so technically I won.

Anyways. I just recorded a new, fully-realized version of "Waiting for the Other Shoe to Drop," from that album. It's song #2 toward my Song a Week in 2010 project. You can hear it here, and I do hope you enjoy it. See you next week!

For Melvin

It's been really hush-hush until this afternoon, but at last it can be revealed! I've been working on this cover of Melvin's Songfight classic "God Hates Penguins!" Several other Songfighters recorded Melvin covers, which were all revealed at once as part of a big surprise coverfest this afternoon. Here's the page here.

Guess how many layers of my voice are in that last chorus? :)

Good, bad, worse, good

I've got some good news, some bad news, some worse news, and then some more good news.

The good news is that those skyrocketing unemployment numbers no longer include the likes of little ol' Jon Eric. I'm now once again gainfully employed 40 hours a week.

The bad news is that such gainful employment takes a lot of time away from me. Time that might be better spent recording music for you wonderful people. The solution, of course, would be for you to donate some cash to the Jon Eric fund, or buy my EP!

The worse news is that, in order to take the new job, I had to write to the Austin Live Music Academy and tell them that I am regrettably unable to attend this year's session.

There's a silver lining to all this, though, because I've spent my spare hours of the last couple of weeks cobbling together a new piece for you! It's from the Songfight title "Back to the Well," and it features Signboy on drums and your friendly neighborhood webmaster Spud on the bass!

It's currently up for consideration at Songfight (and if it's not when you read this, it will be in a few hours), so head on over and listen to some of the songs, and vote for the ones you like!

Also, as with "Get to You," I've written up a chord chart and posted it here.

New Song - "Get to You"

If you don't know Andrew Reist, the sole member of the band Umm..., you might want to check him out. Occasionally, he hosts 125-Minute Frenzies, a flash songwriting competition which he advertises on the Songfight message boards.

This evening, at 6:00 CST, one such Frenzy began. The announced title was "Get to You," and by 8:05 CST, I had made This little ditty.

Also, for a change, I've made available the chords for the song, at this link.

Let me know what you think!

New Song - "Amsterdam"

The new Songfight, "Amsterdam," is due, and sometime in the next couple of days, it'll be updated with all the new songs, including one by Jon Eric & Friends (click to listen). It features the industrious help of R. Mosquito on drums and The Def Author rapping!

Nur Ein Round 4, wherein the poet sings

Round 4 of Nur Ein has been underway for two days at this point, with my new song "What Once Was Grand" is among the competition. There's nine other songs in the running, and four will be eliminated. Will I make the cut? Who knows! All I know is it was very fun to engage in this week's non-optional challenge: lyrics must be in the form of a sonnet.

EDIT: Well, I'm finally eliminated. Finished dead last. It was a fun ride while it lasted. See you all next song!

Round 3 - Herein there be rap!

Round 3 of Nur Ein IV begins at midnight tonight, and my new song "Silver Tongue" will be among the thirteen entries posted. One artist has already declared he won't be able to get his song in, so there will be three cuts this round. Will I make the grade? Hopefully the stylings of R. Mosquito and my new Roland P101 should help.

The non optional challenge was "Guest appearance. Guest must rap in your song." I didn't want Reve to feel all alone on the mic, so I rapped too. Fair warning.

Hear the song here.

UPDATE: Out of 13 songs, I finished 8th. Not stellar, but enough to continue to the next round. See you there!

Round 2

Round 2 of Nur Ein has begun! With three acts having missed the deadline, there will be only two cuts this round. Will my song make the grade? You tell me.

The title was "Schadenfreude," and the non-optional challenge was "Song must argue two sides of an argument."

Oh, and one more thing... I've been trying to keep it relatively clean, but this song happens to have a dirty word in the chorus. If you're particularly sensitive to the "f-word," then I'd advise you to steer clear of this one.

EDIT: The results are in, and I finished in 5th place!

Round 1

Nur Ein Round 1 is up! The title: "Bullets and Lovers." The challenge: Song must be 2:00 or less, including at least two verses, at least two iterations of a chorus, and a solo.

Hear my entry here!

Nur Ein is on!

If you're not in the know about Nur Ein, here's the scoop. Each year since 2006, Niveous hosts an intense elimination challenge called Nur Ein (German for "Only One"). 25 entrants begin the competition, and through a series seven elimination rounds, only one will be left standing. The past winners have been Glenn Case, Puce, and The Worldly Self Assurance (couldn't find a website for the WSA, sorry).

The qualifying round, Round Zero, which will determine the 25 contestants, has just ended. Its title was "Sleep Tight," with the stipulation that the song must include (human) whistling. For my entry, I went with something a bit different from what I've been doing lately. You can hear it here. I'll let you know what the judges think when the results come in in two days.

UPDATE: Round Zero had exactly 25 contestants, so no eliminations... yet. See you in Round 1!
UPDATE 2: The rankings came in. Out of 25 entrants, I placed 13th. directly in the middle. Not bad.

New Songfight collaboration

Jon Eric has teamed up with Nigel "Sp00n" Clements to form Generic Sp00ns, the new band that is sure to dominate this next week's Songfight!

...For certain definitions of "Dominate."

It all started when Nigel posted this lovely set of reviews including one for my "Back from Juvie," which read as follows:

Maybe I've said this before, maybe not, but with a touch more humour you could easily forge quite a following via sites like Fump! you have a definate style that would sit easily with Dr. Demento fraternity (i believe), Possible Vote!

I contacted him and said "If you can bring the funny, I can bring the sunny." The result was this silly little number complete with an intentionally bad guitar solo.

New equipment alert! This song marks the maiden voyage of both my new Yamaha YDD-60 and my new MXL 9090 condenser microphone.

New Song! "Walking the Border"

Okay, so it's been six months since I did anything on here. I've gone longer.

Anyway, the deadline for the next Songfight is in about thirteen hours, and it'll be updating sometime between two and seventy-two hours thereafter. And when it does, my new song, "Walking the Border," will be there. Since you've been so vigilant, waiting for the next update, I'll give it to you early. Have a listen.

Also, if you care at all about webcomics, you might want to check out my new project, The Webcomics Digest. I can't guarantee that I'll never cross-advertise.
